Tiffany & Co.
The company Tiffany & Co. was founded by Charles Lewis Tiffany and his schoolmate John Young in 1837. They established a stationary and fancy goods store in New York, it was called Tiffany & Young.
The first day they made $4.98.
Also in 1837 a distinctive shade of blue was choosen to be used on Tiffany & Co. boxes, brochures, catalogues and other promotional items.

In 1853 Charles Lewis Tiffany renamed the company Tiffany & Co.
In 1867 Tiffany & Co. became the first American firm to win a European award for the excellence of its silverware at the Paris Exposition Universelle.
In 1873 the first Tiffany item was exhebited in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Today there are countless Tiffany items in museum collections worldwide.
In 1878 Charles Tiffany purchased the "Tiffany diamond", one of the world's largest and finest fancy yellow diamond. The cutting of the stone to 128.54 carats with 90 facets (it weighed 287.42 carats in the rough when it was discovered in 1877 in South Africa) was supervised by Dr. George Frederick Kunz, who was the first gemologist to be hired by a jeweler. The Tiffany Diamond now appears in the “Bird on a Rock” setting, designed in the early 1960s by Jean Schlumberger. The “bird” is gold and platinum with white and yellow diamonds accented by a ruby eye.

In 1886 Tiffany created the so called "Tiffany setting", a 6 prong diamond solitaire setting.

In 1887 Tiffany called the "King of Diamonds" after acquiring some of the french Crown jewels.
In 1902 Louis Comfort Tiffany, the son of Charles Tiffany, established the "Tiffany Art Jewelry" department where he started manufacturing his innovative jewelry.
In 1907 Tiffany's chief gemologist George Kunz played a major role in the international adoption of the metric carat as a weight standard for gems and diamonds.
In 1926 the United States goverment accepted the the Tiffany standard of purity for the official standard for platinum in the United States.
In 1940 Tiffany moved to its current location, on Fifth Avenue at 57th street in New York.
In 1956 the parisian jewelry designer Jean Schlumberger opened his salon at Tiffany & Co.
In 1972 Tiffany opened a Tiffany boutique in Japan, in the Mitsukoshi Department Store.
In 1974 Elsa Peretti (she was named the 1996 Accessories Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America) became a jewelry designer for Tiffany.

In 1980 Paloma Picasso introduced her designs at Tiffany.

In 1986 Tiffany opened a store in London, expanding the company into European markets.
In 1987 Tiffany offers its stock for trading in the New York Stock Exchange.
In 1999, 114 years after Tiffany introduced the Tiffany Setting, they made their newest engagement ring, the Lucida. The diamond cut is a patented Tiffany original.

In 2000 the Tiffany & Co. Foundation is established. Their project included the World Wildlife Fund, the New York Restoration project, the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
In 2002 Tiffany designed the Tiffany Mark wristwatch, celebrating the 150 years of its fine watchmaking.

In 2003 the Tiffany Legacy Collection was introduced. The collection featured diamond engagement rings and wedding bands. Today the collection includes earrings, pendants and bracelets, too. Notice the patented cushon cut center stone surrounded by bead-set diamonds.

In 2005 Tiffany presented the Tiffany Grand Collection of swiss-made timepieces, inspired by Tiffany's rectangular 1930's, 1940's watch design.

In 2006 Tiffany presented the Frank Gehry Collection. Frank Gehry is the winner of the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize (1989) and he is arguably the world's greatest living architect.
